Alex Baxter

My passion is working with children (ages 2+) and teens in an effort to connect my clients with internal happiness, capability, courage, and resiliency as they navigate the different stages of life.  I strive to provide a nurturing, welcoming, and safe atmosphere that allows my clients to explore their emotional experience, learn effective skills, and make changes that push them toward healing and wellness. I aim to meet my clients where they are, in any given moment, and provide gentle, yet encouraging guidance towards their goals.

I received my Masters in Mental Health Counseling from Georgia State University and have continued my clinical training with a specialized focus in play therapy over the past 11 years of being in the field. My experience includes outpatient, inpatient, and residential settings, primarily with children, adolescents, and parents. My areas of interest include anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, coping with parental divorce, behavioral difficulties, low self-esteem, identity formation, school related issues, social skills, and Autism Spectrum Disorder.

I build my work upon a client-centered approach, as I believe that a strong therapeutic relationship is the foundation to therapeutic success. I utilize an integrative approach and incorporate non-directive and directive play therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), expressive-arts interventions, skill building, Motivational Interviewing, Trauma-Focused CBT, talk therapy, and a strengths-based approach into my clinical work.

Overall, I work from the belief that all behavior is purposeful and displayed in an effort to meet certain needs. I aim to promote increased client awareness and insight so that my clients can better recognize their emotional needs and identify adaptive strategies to meet said needs. During this process, I focus on building my clients’ confidence in their ability to cope with intense emotions, effectively express thoughts and feelings, and embrace their internal strengths, while translating these skills into their everyday life.

Seeking therapy can feel overwhelming and daunting for some. I hope that you will find my approach to be warm, supportive, empathic, and accepting. I look forward to working with you and your family as you begin the journey toward wellness!
