SPACE Parent-Based Treatment Program
Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions
-
Leah Molloy, MS, LPC, NCC
SPACE is an evidence-based, parent-focused treatment that helps parents support children and teens experiencing anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Developed by Dr. Eli Lebowitz at the Yale Child Study Center, SPACE empowers parents with practical strategies to respond to their child’s anxiety with compassion and confidence.
Through SPACE, parents learn to gradually reduce family accommodations, such as providing repeated reassurance or adjusting routines to help a child avoid anxiety-provoking situations. Instead, parents develop supportive responses that communicate understanding while encouraging their child to build confidence, tolerate uncertainty, and develop greater independence.
SPACE focuses on helping parents create meaningful change at home. Sessions provide practical tools to help families navigate anxiety and support their child’s emotional growth. Children do not need to attend sessions for parents to participate in this treatment.
