Meet Alex Baxter
I am passionate about working with children and teens to help them connect with their internal sense of peace, capability, courage, and resiliency as they move through the challenges of growing up and learn to feel grounded in who they are. I strive to create a nurturing, welcoming, and safe environment where young people can explore their emotional world, learn effective skills, and establish lasting change. My intention is to meet all clients where they are — in any given moment — and offer gentle, encouraging guidance as they move toward their goals.
I received my Master’s in Mental Health Counseling from Georgia State University and have spent the past 11 years focusing my training and clinical work on the kiddos and teens of today. My experience spans across outpatient, inpatient, and residential settings working with a wide array of concerns, such as anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, parental divorce, behavioral challenges, low self-esteem, identity formation, perfectionism, school-related concerns, social skills, suicidality, self-harm and neurodivergence, specifically Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD.
My work is rooted in a client-centered approach as I believe the therapeutic relationship is the foundation of meaningful change. I use an integrative framework to include non-directive and directive play therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), expressive arts, skill building, Motivational Interviewing, Trauma-Focused CBT, talk therapy, mindfulness practices, and a strengths-based lens. I operate from the belief that all behavior is purposeful and I see my role as that of helping children and teens build awareness, recognize their emotional needs, and develop adaptive strategies to meet those needs in more effective ways.
Throughout the therapy process, I collaborate with clients and their families on strengthening clients’ confidence in their ability to cope with emotions, express themselves effectively, and embrace their internal strengths. I offer guidance in the process of translating these skills into clients’ daily lives so they can feel more grounded, capable, and connected within themselves and the world around them.
I offer individual therapy for clients ages 2–17, parent–child therapy, and parent consultations. I am known best for my work with clients who are often seen as anxious, big-feeling, perfectionistic, and neurodivergent. Over the years, I have earned the nickname “the child whisperer,” a reflection of my ability to connect with young children, as well as teens and their families along their healing journeys.
My energy with clients can be described as warm, playful, creative, and deeply empathetic - with a healthy dose of humor. Whether we’re playing, creating, or talking, I show up authentically and down to earth. You’ll often find me sitting on the floor with clients or curled up in a cozy chair, creating a space that feels safe, accepting, and supportive. Tears, laughter, and everything in between are welcome here.
Outside the therapy room, I love coffee dates with friends, playing with my dog, Penny, and watching Grey’s Anatomy. I’m inspired by resources such as the Play Therapy and Holding Space podcasts, and I often recommend books such as Quiet Power: The Secret Strengths of Introverted Kids and The Whole-Brain Child to the families I work with. I’m also influenced by the work of Brené Brown and Paris Goodyear-Brown.
Seeking therapy can feel overwhelming. My hope is that you find me to be warm, encouraging, understanding, and accepting. I look forward to working with you and your family as you begin this journey toward wellness!
